Summary: It does not matter who you host your website with I encourage you to use the safety net strategy to keep up-to-date backup copies of your website theme working files on your local hard drive.
There are countless tutorials available explaining hundreds of strategies about design and configuration. Very few tutorials discuss how to recover from mistakes. Everyone tells you not to be afraid to make mistakes, that’s how you learn.” While this may be true, making mistakes in WordPress requires you have the ability to step backwards to the point before you made the mistake.
It is easy to develop a false sense of security when working on theme files. You get caught up trying to make a change and all of a sudden you find yourself in trouble with no way out.
The most important lesson of my WordPress career was the day I learned this bullet proof and SIMPLE system for recovering from self-inflicted theme configuration mistakes.
First Things First
In order to transfer files from your webhost to your computer you will need to install an FTP program but remember, do not use FTP, instead, use SFTP.
Set up your folder system on your computer.
Safety Net Strategy #1
Before you work on any theme files first drag a copy of those file(s) from your host webserver onto your computer BEFORE any changes are made.
Once I’m convinced my changes are good and everything is okay, I drag the updated file(s) on the hosts webserver to the corresponding file/directory on my local hard drive.
Now if I am editing a website file and there is a problem I can just as easily drag the backup copy from the folder/directory on my local hard drive… to the folder/directory on the host server.
Safety Net Strategy #2
Instead of dragging files from your host webserver you copy files and paste into a document on your computer.
Installed a text editor such as Brackets, Windows and Mac. (Free)
Use the same computer folder structure as in #1 above.
In the Working Files folder create these files with Brackets.
Now when you are working on your theme files you will only need to copy the entire file > open the file on your computer > select all > paste > save!
Do this before you make any changes and when you are done making changes.
